How can I cultivate heart-led critical thinking?

Begin by answering these questions for yourself (and maybe journal about them too):

  • How can I quiet my ego, so that I receive the world from a place of stillness and serenity?
  • How can I honor the questions of my mind’s inherent curiosity, so that I examine ideas more deeply than required by present problem-solving?
  • How can I open my perception to the interconnectedness of all phenomena, receiving them with wonder and awe?
  • How can I give myself permission to play with ideas, allowing the creative urge to take me where received knowledge never would?
  • How can I welcome love — of ideas, self, others, humanity, life, and creation — into the heart of all that I do?

Return to those five questions, again and again and again. They will take you far.

Thomas also has some answers to offer. Subscribe to his newsletter to receive his ongoing musings on these questions, and announcements about talks, workshops, and retreats where, together, we’ll explore these questions more deeply.

How can I lead with love?

Love should be the first thought, not the afterthought, in all that we do. Too often it’s consigned to the edges of our days: a sentimentality not suited to production, profit, and practical minds. Imagine what your life could look like, what our world could be, if we truly led with love.

Here are some questions to consider as you learn to let love lead your life:

  • What do I tolerate in my life? What if I no longer did?
  • How do I compromise the call to compassion? What might happen if I chose compassion instead?
  • When do I force myself to appear (or even to feel) enthusiastic and engaged? What would actually enthuse me?
  • How am I selling out my heart’s true desires for something shiny or secure? What if I rejected the thing in favor of what actually makes my heart sing?
  • Who and what have I been told I should love? Who and what do I actually love?
  • When do I feel most alive?
  • What are some specific ways that I can remake my work, my life, my community, even my world to feel so alive more often?

Thomas has much more to say about how loving compassion and kindness can lead us toward a better way. Subscribe to his newsletter to receive his ongoing contemplations on these questions, plus announcements about talks, workshops, and retreats where you can learn to lead with love.

How can I transform my story for a more meaningful life?

The events of our lives don’t come to us with their meaning already told. While we cannot control all that happens to us nor guarantee how our hopeful plans will unfold, we can decide what meaning our life will hold. What are the chapters of the purposeful life you will lead?

These questions may help you draft a compelling story that will transform your life.

  • Accepting that the events of my past cannot be changed, what is a true story I can tell about my path thus far that reveals how it leads me to the meaningful life I’m living now and toward the purpose I dream my life will hold?
  • Acknowledging that my present is ephemeral and ever-changing, what chapter of my life’s story am I living right now? How did my past lead to this? Where would the gentle reader of my story hope it will go? What do I, as a generous reader, hope will happen next?
  • Knowing that the future is ever uncertain and always unknown, where do I want the next chapters of my life to take me? What would be a satisfying conclusion to this story my life will tell?

Once you know the better story you want to tell with your life, you’ll have the clarity to find your way in the pathless forest before you. What no longer serves the story you want to tell? What’s worth your bold bravery and dedicated work? What’s missing from your story, and how can you bring it to life?

Thomas loves to help people transform their stories to live more meaningful lives. Subscribe to the newsletter to receive his ongoing thoughts on these questions, and announcements about retreats and workshops that will help you retell your story well.
